Film director Peter Weir’s first movie set, Church Point’s Homesdale, up for sale - News Ltd

Film directors and media legends have lived in one of Church Point’s oldest residences, Homesdale, which has just come to market with a guide of $7.2m-$7.9m.

The current owner of the McCarrs Creek Rd property is director Bruce Hunt and his artist wife, Therese.

Bruce worked on movies such as The Matrix and Australia and Therese paints in an Alex Popov studio at the property.

The Hunts bought from the late Carol Willesee, who loved the property’s terraced gardens. Carol was an actress and the wife of veteran journalist Mike Willesee.

The beautiful gardens are among the home’s attractions.

Pittwater views.

But the most notable resident is Peter Weir, who directed Gallipoli, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Witness and Master and Commander.

Peter, now 78, shot his first film, called Homesdale, at the Pittwater property back in 1971 when he was a tenant.

The wide verandahs and cream stucco made him think of a hospital in the Crimea and friends told him the homestead reminded them of a plantation house in South America.

The short movie was a black comedy set in a haunted house and it won him his first award.

Now the circa 1911 single-level colonial-style home is up for grabs again.

Full of charm.

There’s an infinity edge pool.

Ken Jacobs, of Forbes Global Properties, said it was tricky to price such an unusual property which was on 2578sqm of land overlooking Pittwater.

“If this was in Mosman you’d be looking at least $15m to $20m,” he said.

Homesdale has four grand bedrooms, three bathrooms and parking for four cars.

There are formal living and dining rooms, a casual living area and a Gaggenau gas kitchen.

The main bedroom includes a dressing room and ensuite.

Outside is an infinity-edge swimming pool with poolhouse, lawns, dry-stone walls with perfumed plants and an olive grove and hedging for maximum privacy.
